GitHub actively replacing functionality with Copliot
I am frustrated.
What happened to me today
I was reviewing a PR this morning like I do every single day. My teammate submitted a change for a new feature and I went to click "Add suggestion" to show describe them a refactoring. The button is gone. Just... gone. Replaced with some Copilot prompt.
I've ignored Copilot popping up everywhere for months now. I didn't complain. But this is different. You didn't add a new feature I could ignore. You took away something I actually use and need, and you replaced it with AI I didn't ask for.
I honestly thought it was a bug at first. I refreshed the page. Checked another PR. Nope. You actually removed it?
Why this is killing me
The "Add suggestion" button was perfect for what I needed. Quick, simple, got the job done. I use it many times a day when I'm doing reviews. Today when I reached for it, it wasn't there.
I can't just "use Copilot instead." That's not the same thing. I know what suggestion I want to make. I don't need AI to generate it for me. I just need to write it and send it. That's what the button did. I don't want to manually add six backticks and "suggestion".
And then I started noticing everything else
After I discovered this, I actually started paying attention to how much Copilot is crammed into my PR workflow now. I counted:
In the top navigation: There's a "Chat with Copilot" button
Okay fine. I can ignore this one.
At the top of every PR: "You can mention Copilot in comments"
Annoying, but whatever. I can scroll past it.
In the assignee dropdown: Copilot shows up like it's a person on my team
This is just weird. Why is an AI in my assignee list?
When I hover over code: Another Copilot button appears
More visual noise I have to look past.
And now in my review comments: My "Add suggestion" button is gone, replaced by Copilot
This is the one that actually stops me from doing my work.
That's five different Copilot prompts in a single PR review. Five! And the fifth one took away functionality I actually need.
What I'm asking for
I'm not trying to be difficult here. I just want to be able to do my job the way I've been doing it. Here's what would fix this for me:
Give me back the "Add suggestion" button. Please. Just put it back. If you want to have Copilot there too, fine, but don't take away the thing that was already working.
Stop replacing features with AI. I get that Microsoft is betting big on Copilot. I understand that. But please don't force it on people by removing the tools they're already using. That's not an upgrade. That's just breaking things.
Why I'm so frustrated
Look, I've been using GitHub for years. I have my workflows. I liked the GitHub workflow.
This morning I woke up, opened GitHub, and the tool I reach for multiple times every day was just gone. Replaced with something I don't want and didn't ask for. I just have to deal with it.
That's not "adding AI features." That's breaking my workflow and telling me to adapt.
I don't want to sound dramatic, but this genuinely makes me consider whether I want to keep using GitHub for my team's PRs. If you're going to keep removing features I rely on and replacing them with AI, what's next? What else are you going to take away and replace with AI?
I really hope someone at GitHub reads this and understands that this isn't just about one button.
Please just give me back my "Add suggestion" button.
