This usually happens because GitHub recently switched to passwordless authentication, meaning you now need to sign in using a passkey, GitHub mobile app, or authenticator code, instead of a password. Here’s how to fix it:
Once you’re in, go to Settings → Password and Authentication → Passkeys and set up a passkey or GitHub mobile login so you won’t be prompted for a password again. |

Hi @i80hack 👋 GitHub no longer supports password-based logins — they’ve moved to passwordless authentication for better security. That’s why you’re seeing the “passwords aren’t allowed” message. Here’s what you can do: Go to GitHub Login. When asked for a password, click “Sign in with a passkey” or “Use another method”. Choose one of these options: GitHub Mobile App: Approve the login from your phone. Authenticator App: Enter the 6-digit code. Passkey: Use your device’s biometric or security key if you’ve set one up. If none of these work, use a recovery code (provided when you set up 2FA). Still stuck? Use GitHub Account Recovery. Once you log in, go to Settings → Password and Authentication → Passkeys to set up an easier sign-in method for next time. |

I recently created a new account. When I tried to log into it, it asks for a password and then tells me passwords aren't allowed. How do I get into my new account? I have the authenticator app, but it still asks for a password.
TIA,
Fitz
