🚀 Introducing GPT-5-Codex in Public Preview for GitHub Copilot

We’ve got exciting news: the newest model, OpenAI’s GPT-5-Codex, optimized for agentic coding, is now rolling out in public preview through GitHub Copilot. If you’ve been waiting for more powerful, efficient tools to help with coding, this release brings several important updates you’ll want to try out.

What’s New

• Model availability: GPT-5-Codex will be usable for folks on Copilot’s Pro, Pro+, Business, and Enterprise plans.
• Where to use it: Once enabled, you can select GPT-5-Codex directly in the model picker inside Visual Studio Code, under the “ask”, “edit”, and “agent” modes.
• Version requirement: To access it, make sure your Copilot extension for VS Code is updated to v1.104.1 or higher. If you don’t see the model yet, you may need to wait — the rollout is gradual.

How to Get Started

Here’s what you need to do depending on your plan:

Your Plan	What to Do
Enterprise & Business	An administrator needs to go into the Copilot settings and enable the GPT-5-Codex policy. Once that’s done, the model becomes available to everyone in your org.
Pro & Pro+	You can enable it yourself by selecting GPT-5-Codex from the model picker in VS Code. A one-time prompt will ask you to confirm.
